About the industry

Big flying robots are already being used by industry to reduce costs and improve safety. For example energy companies are using drones to carry out aerial inspections of high value assets such as wind turbines, flare stacks, live transmission towers, and pipelines. They are also being used by the emergency services to monitor the aftermath of natural disasters, find missing persons, and assist with search and rescue. Other uses include topographic surveys, crop monitoring, news gathering, package delivery, and cattle herding.

Due to their size and weight, most industrial-spec commercial drones have the potential to inflict damage on people or property in the event of a collision. Their use is, therefore, highly regulated by the associations that govern airspace. For example, in the UK the CAA have specified that commercial drones must be operated within line of sight, not flown further than a vertical distance of 500m, and a horizontal distance of 120m. Also, they cannot be flown less than 50m from people, vehicles, buildings or structures, or 150m from crowded areas and restricted airspace. Furthermore, they cannot weigh more than 20kg, or fly faster than 70kmh (45 mph); some Quadcopters are capable of flying at speeds of almost 90mph!

Commercial drones have been designed almost exclusively for outdoor use, and some have even been modified to withstand harsh weather conditions. They also need to carry an array of sensors and on-board equipment, as well expensive payloads such as high-res cameras, electro-optical, infrared, Lidar, and hyperspectral devices that can weigh up to 10kgs. Furthermore commercial drone operators must obtain CAA certification before they are allowed to fly a drone outdoors. We think this represents a huge opportunity for companies like ours that wish to exploit commercial opportunities within the indoor micro drone sector (IMDS).

For obvious reasons, large drones should never be flown indoors, or within confined spaces, particularly if people are within close proximity. In contrast, micro drones do not pose a significant threat to people or property, so can be operated safely indoors, and within close proximity of people and pets. In future, micro drones will be able to use collision avoidance to ensure that they do not come into involuntary contact with anything within the surrounding area. We believe the commercial micro drone market is about to explode, which is why we decided to launch Little Flying Robots.

About the team

The team are in the process of developing all kinds of potentially game-changing applications for micro drones. With safety in mind, we are exploring collision avoidance technologies, new form factors, and wireless charging solutions. In addition, we are investigating how different types of materials could be utilised to make micro drones even lighter and more robust. We are also thinking about how fleets of micro drones could be automated and managed remotely, and how business models could potentially be applied to this new and exciting field of technology.
